AN INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGE

Italian is spoken by about 80-125 million people. Apart from Italy, it is spoken by inhabitants of San Marino, Vatican, Switzerland, Costa Rica, Malta, and former Italian colonies. Italian vocabulary is similar to Latin more than other Roman languages. On the other hand, Italian is a very heterogeneous language. There are several dozens of Italian dialects, but the official one is the one based on the Tuscan standard. It is so because of Dante Alighieri, active at the turn of the 12th century, the author of "Divine Comedy" - the first Italian poem. Most probably the longest Italian word is "precipitevolissimevolménte", which means "precipitously."
